[Bookplate for Henry Flitcroft] In black ink, this chippendale-style bookplate consists of an asymmetrical escutcheon, or (gold), containing two chevronels, gules (red), each with the appearance of a label. The top chevronel is an elevated label, while the base chevronel is an inverted label. The label is a heraldic symbol representing the first son. The escutcheon also contains two escalopes over one fleur-de-lis. In typical chippendale fashion, the escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate floral mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's name and place of origin. 42. [Bookplate for Hilda Shibley] Printed in black ink on white paper, the words 'EX LIBRIS' appear at the top of the bookplate, below which sits a winged stag facing left or a stag sitting on a winged cloud. Below the stag appear the words HILDA / SHIBLEY.'. 43. [Bookplate for Holland House] In black ink , a chapeau crimson (red), lined with ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), a fox sejant, or (gold), floating above is a coronet of a baron. 44. [Bookplate for Hood] This bookplate consists of a escutcheon, azure (blue) and a fret, argent (silver), with a chief, or (gold), charged with three crescents. The shield features an inescutcheon or, with a chevron sable (black), charged with three wildcat heads cabossed, two over one. Above the inescutcheon is another small escutcheon argent, with a human hand gules, indicating the status of Knight and Baronet. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, and the escutcheon is supported by a merman at dexter and a mermaid at sinister. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Below entire achievement is bookplate owner's name. 45. [Bookplate for Hugh Lyle Smyth] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing an invected bend, azure (blue). The escutcheon is charged with two unicorn heads, gules (red) and erased, at dexter base and sinister chief ; the bend is charged with three lozenges, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts). Above the escutcheon is a dexter closed helmet, which is topped by a ducal coronet and a unicorn head, gules and erased, with lozenge, ermine. From either side of the helmet flows elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 46. [Bookplate for J. Harry Smith by William Walker Alexander] Printed in brown ink on cream paper, the bookplate shows a man in the dress of a 19th-century agricultural laborer against a background of clouds and a landscape of fields, trees, and three buildings (possibly a house, a barn, and an out building). The man holds a basket in his left hand and sows seeds with his right hand. In the left foreground, a lamb frolics next to an open book. The right page of the book reads 'LAMB'S / TALES.' Underneath the open book appears a manuscript upon which rests an inkwell and a quill pen. The date '1942' is written in the bottom left corner of the manuscript. To the right of the book appears a mailbox with 'R. R. / 4' written on the door. On the side of the mailbox appear the words 'Knoll Farm / J. HARRY SMITH.' Below and to the right of mailbox appears an inverted triangle with the initials 'W W' at the base of the triangle and the initial 'A' at the top of the triangle. 47. [Bookplate for J. I. Frank Anthes] In red and black ink on cream or white paper, the bookplate consists of a red double border surrounding black text. 48. [Bookplate for J. Rumsey] Printed in black ink, a simple linear border with sparsely set flowers surrounds the text. The seal in the center of the bookplate displays an image of the Calvary Church. 49. [Bookplate for James Bruce MacKinnon] Black ink. A straight wreath is charged with a boar's head, erased, holding a deer's shank bone in its mouth. Below the boar's head waves a banner containing the MacKinnon family motto. 50. [Bookplate for James Bryce Allan] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per bend, dancetty. Bordure, azure [blue]. Above field, argent [white] and ermine, a stag, gules [red], erased, antlers, or [gold], and an annulet, or. Below field, gules, a crescent. Helm has mantling around a tilting helmet on top of which is a curved crest wreath with a dog, erased. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 51. [Bookplate for James Croil] Printed in black ink on light green paper. It has a border of entwined lines. 52. [Bookplate for James Fielding Sweeny] At the top center of the bookplate is a mitre with a crosier on the left side and a banner on the right side. Below that is a crest with argent (silver) background, divided by per pale ; on the sinister side, a mitre and key are crossed, with a coronet, two books, and a dove, holding an olive branch. On the dexter side, two battle axes crossed above two boars, rampant, counterpassant. Beneath that is another crest, divided per pale. The sinister side has an argent background and two battle axes, crossed, above two boars, rampant, counterpassant. On the dexter side, is a lion, rampant. At the base of the bookplate is an alley of columns. 53. [Bookplate for James John Joicey] This bookplate is printed on light brown paper with brown ink. It consists of an escutcheon argent (silver), and three diamonds in pale between two endorses in a crosshatch pattern. The escutcheon is charged with a pick-axe at both dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, positioned at three-quarter profile, indicating the status of peer. Upon the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a young man holding a pick-axe and lantern. Radiating from the wreath is elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Entire crest is contained within a border, with name of bookplate owner at bottom. 54. [Bookplate for James M. Wishart by Leslie Victor Smith] Printed in black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of a two line border surrounding a circular design of vines and leaves with the words 'EX LIBRIS' appearing at the top. In the upper third of the design at center appears a University of Toronto Medical School coat of arts bearing a skull and crossbones. Below the coat of arm to the left appears an open book and to the right appears a three-stringed harp. The initials of the designer, Leslie Victor Smith, and the date "1940" appear at the bottom of the design. Below the design appears the name of the owner. 55. [Bookplate for James Phinney Baxter] In black ink. This ex-libris includes a portrait of the originator in the upper-right-hand corner, identified by his name and geographic locale. The remaining two-thirds of the bookplate consist of a depiction of the interior of a library. In a section spanning the base of the bookplate is a cursive, printed motto and a hand-written book number. The printed text is drawn from the last two lines of the second stanza of a poem composed by Baxter, entitled, "The Library." 56. [Bookplate for James Stevenson by H. Wilson] A Latin phrase is written on a banner at the top of the plate. Beneath it is a hand ascending from a heraldic silk wreath, holding a crown of leaves. While illustrated in a pictorial style, the image is reminiscent of the heraldic image of a dexter hand couped at the wrist, holding a crown of laurel or bay leaves. 57. [Bookplate for Jas Christison] The text is surrounded by a patterned border. 58. [Bookplate for John Bebb] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), with an or (gold) embattled fess. The fess contains two cross crosslets. On the azure surface of the escutcheon are three crescents, two over one. The escutcheon is bordered by an elaborate frame and topped by a visored helm in profile. Atop the helm is a crest wreath and an unicorn's head, couped and horned. From the helm flows extensive mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 59. [Bookplate for John Caton Thompson] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield parted per pale, baron and femme, three coats ; first, or, a bordure, argent, a lion rampant ; second, parted per fess, sable, on a chevron argent, between three swans' heads, two over one, erased at the neck, ducally gorged, three pellet one over two ; in base (same as second) sable, on a chevron argent, between three swans' heads, two over one, erased at the neck, ducally gorged, three pellet one over two. Above a straight wreath, the crest of a lion rampant, ducally gorged. Below the shield, laurel sprigs. At the bottom of the ex libris appears the name 'John Caton Thompson.'. 60. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name.
